General Electric is formed

Smithsonian · founding context

Founded by the Edison General Electric–Thomson-Houston merger on April 15, 1892, GE is represented here through 237 sourced exhibits—not a complete inventory. The earliest photographed, dated artifact is a lamp socket cataloged as 1894–1895; earlier Edison inventions provide historical context.

Museum, archival and corporate sources document the collection, not current public display. Look-alike illustrations and prototypes are clearly labeled. No GE-made fashion garments or cosmetics are verified here; Britain’s GEC was a separate company.
